Connecticut Girl Scouts and Naval Submarine Base Team Up to Provide Homes for Little Brown Bats During National Public Lands Day

On November 11, 2008, Girl Scout Troop 63033 from Uncasville, Connecticut collaborated on a National Public Lands Day project with the US Navy at the Naval Submarine Base in which the Girl Scouts installed box homes for Little Brown Bats. As part of an October NPLD activity, volunteers placed 15 bat boxes throughout the base.

Providing homes for the bats is an environmentally friendly way of controlling the mosquitoes invading New London and part of an effort to increase the brown bat population, which has been decreasing for unknown reasons. Richard Conant, a base Environmental Division biologist, explained this to the Girl Scouts and educated them about other topics related to the brown bat species.
