Learn How You Can Help Spruce Up Our Beautiful Lands!

Prince William Forest Park
Signature National Public Lands Day Event

September 27, 2008

At Prince William Forest National Park, a unit of the National Park Service in Triangle, Virginia, hundreds of volunteers commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) on NPLD 2008 by planting trees, repairing trails and restoring historic cabins built by the CCC in the 1930s and 1940s.

Between April 25 (Arbor Day) and September 27, 2008, National Public Lands Day encouraged public land managers, non-profit groups, school groups, and individuals to plant one million trees in honor of the CCC. Volunteers at Prince William, including CCC alumni and members of Boy and Girl Scouts, completed this effort by planting the one millionth tree on Sept 27!

This volunteer event coincided with the reunion of the Virginia Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) alumni. Volunteers included members of the Student Conservation Association, The Corps Network, Friends of Prince William Forest Park, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts who all helped honor the legacy of the CCC and lended a hand to care for the park. Speakers included Sally Prouty of The Corps Network, Senator Harris Wooford, Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynne Scarlett, among others.

In addition to the volunteer work, a live music concert and raffle contest were held at the end of the day at a lunch provided to all volunteers.
