Start a "Carbon Garden" at your site
Invasive species are a major threat to our national public lands -- they can alter whole ecosystems and destroy precious local plants and wildlife. As we work to root out these pests and weeds, we have the opportunity to replace them with natives that are better for the environment.
We all know that trees and plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out life-giving oxygen, and that is good for the atmosphere -- but which plants soak up the most carbon?
On the map below, we've compiled a list of the top five trees in each region for drawing carbon from the atmosphere, based on information provided by the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, and reviewed by a scientist with the USDA Forest Service.
If you're removing invasive species from your yard or garden, replace them with a carbon garden made up of some of the trees selected for your region.
We can all make a difference for our public lands and in our private gardens. Plant a carbon garden today!
