The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protects human health and safeguards the natural environment - air, water and land - upon which life depends. EPA employees work with states, tribes, businesses and the general public to ensure the implementation of environmental legislation.

Within the EPA, the Office of Environmental Education advances and supports education efforts that develop an environmentally conscious and responsible public and inspire personal responsibility in caring for the environment. It accomplishes its mission through the provision of grants for environmental education, materials and other resources.EPA employees and family volunteering.

In 2010, the EPA supported the efforts of NPLD by encouraging EPA staff to participate in NPLD events.  EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson was the keynote speaker at the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens signature site in Washington, D.C.  Along with several dozen EPA employees, Administrator Jackson volunteered her time and even worked with a Girl Scout troop to plant trees.
