The USDA Forest Service is dedicated to preserving the nation's forests and grasslands. The Forest Service manages over 190 million acres of land, funds research into sustainability and forestry and assists countries around the world to protect global forests and grasslands.

In 2011, the Forest Service hosted NPLD events at 158 sites across the county, including:

  • Belle Isle - Detroit, Mich.
  • Finger Lakes National Forest - Hector, N.Y.
  • Kaibab National Forest - Fredonia, Ariz.Family volunteering.
  • Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area - Golden Pond, Ky.
  • Olympic National Forest - Tumwater, Wash.

The USDA Forest Service website offers many opportunities for families to learn about forest and grassland habitats, as well as sustainability. The Discover the Forest webpage helps kids find a nearby forest and it provides ideas for recreation and fun activities. Forests, Oceans, Climate and Us (FOCUS) is a collaboration between the Forest Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Wyland Foundation to educate kids about climate change and the connection between forests and oceans.
