Partnership for Parks, an organization that works to increase community support for and involvement in parks throughout New York City is hosting over 10 National Public Lands Day events this year. To commemorate and reward their efforts, National Public Lands Day is presenting them with a $1,000 grant to assist with their National Public Lands Day events. Partnerships for Parks is a joint program of City Parks Foundation and City of New York Parks & Recreation.

Valley Forge National Historical Park has been involved with National Public Lands Day for over 5 years. In 2004, volunteers worked during Hurricane Ivan to clear invasive weeds and help restore a historical building. National Public Lands Day is rewarding Friends of Valley Forge with $500 grant for National Public Lands Day 2006. The grant will help supply gloves, water, and safety supplies for painting and vegetation projects on National Public Lands Day.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has been participating in National Public Lands Day for several years. This year two separate National Public Lands Day projects will take place at Red Rock Canyon. The BLM is organizing an event on September 16th where volunteers will clean up an illegal shooting range and camp sites along a quarter mile of dirt road. Restoration will involve mulching, seeding, and installing live plants.

On September 30th, the Friends of Red Rock Canyon will repair the boardwalk and clear trash at Red Spring picnic area. In addition, several volunteers will perform much needed trail maintenance on Pine Creek, Moenkopi, and Sandstone Quarry trails.

The Friends of Red Rock Canyon will receive $1,000 that will go towards both of these projects. The ceremony will take place at the main visitor center at RRCNCA.

The Bureau of Land Management has an extensive history with National Public Lands Day. Since its involvment in the first National Public Lands Day in 1994, the BLM now turns out over 100 volunteer worksites every year. Moab, Utah is known for its wonderful mountain biking terrain and attracts enthusiasts from all over the world. One thousand dollars will be granted to the Moab Trails Alliance and Grand County Trail Mix to work on mountain bike trails on BLM-managed land. This grant also highlights the longstanding partnership National Public Lands Day has had with the International Mountain Bicycling Association.

The ceremony will take place in front of the Moab Information Center at Main and Center St., Moab, Utah. The MIC is a multi-agency facility, providing information about the parks and public lands maintained by the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the National Park Service.

After the ceremony, a shuttle will be provided to Porcupine Rim where attendees, volunteers, and the public are invited to go mountain biking.

Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. has been the national sponsor for National Public Lands Day since 1999. Every year, dozens of Toyota offices and thousands of volunteers come out on National Public Lands Day to volunteer their free time for our public lands. The Toyota offices in Denver, Colorado have been exceptional stewards of their public lands by planting trees and refurbishing the forest at the Hayman Fire Site outside Denver for several years.

This year, employees are visiting Castlewood Canyon State Park, where tasks include reseeding areas disrupted by a bridge replacement; clearing scrub oak from a historic "mystery" structure; trail maintenance; pulling weeds/mullen; and willow planting.

The Public Lands Day Highlander will visit the Toyota offices where a $2,000 grant will be presented to the Friends of Castlewood Canyon State Park.

Grand County/Arapaho Roosevelt National Forest

Arapaho Roosevelt National Forest has been participating as a National Public Lands Day worksite since the 2nd National Public Lands Day. As a result, they have the most NPLDs out of any site participating this year, with 12 already under their belts. The Arapaho Roosevelt National Forest always does an excellent job partnering with numerous organizations, both public and private.

The Public Lands Tour will stop at Arapaho Roosevelt National Forest to present a $1,000 grant to the Headwaters Trails Alliance for their efforts on the Contenential Divide Trail within Arapaho Rooselvelt National Forest. The ceremony will take place at the Forest Service offices in Granby.

The work projects on National Public Lands Day will include 'buck-n-rail' fence construction to help preserve a historical cabin/ranch as well as new trail construction on a town-to-town connection trail system. Turnpike or bridge construction with trail rehabilitation on High Lonesome Trail, part of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail system, will also be a big part of the project.

 

Yellowstone, Wyoming Yellowstone National Park

The Public Land Tour will be stopping through one of our nation's most prized public lands to present a $1,000 grant to the Yellowstone Park Foundation for specific trail work to be completed on National Public Lands Day. The projects will include elimination of invading plant species from the Indian Creek campground up to Bighorn Pass, which is designated as the headwaters of the famous Gallatin River. The check presentation will take place during the Yellowstone Park Foundation's Board of Directors meeting at the Old Faithful Inn at 6:00 PM.

Portland, Oregon Bonneville Lock and Dam, Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

Bonneville Lock and Dam consists of several dam structures that together complete a span of the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington. The dam is located 40 miles east of Portland, Oregon, in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates and maintains Bonneville Lock and Dam for hydropower production, fish and wildlife protection, recreation and navigation. Since 1938, Bonneville Dam has supplied the region with inexpensive electrical power.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been participating in National Public Lands Day for over 10 years.

This year, Bonneville Lock and Dam plans to spruce up the shoreline, work on habitat restoration and trail improvements, and remove invasive species that are threatening the area. An educational tour of Bonneville Dam and the surrounding area will also be provided to all volunteers and the interested public.

Portland, Oregon Columbia Children's Arboretum 10040 NE 6th Ave Monday

The Portland Toyota offices have been organizing National Public Lands Day events for years. This year, approximately 60 employees will return to volunteer at the Columbia Children's Arboretum to perform an overall spruce-up of the park. Toyota employees will be providing work parties to remove invasive blackberry trees, spread wood-chips, prune trees, and to perform other park maintenance activities.

The Public Lands Tour will stop by the Columbia Children's Arobretum on September 25th and present the Friends of Columbia Children's Arboretum with a $1,000 check to continue to help shape the future of this newly-designated public land (1999).

Northern California Yosemite National Park

Thursday, September 28th - 9:00 AM

From September 27th to October 1st, the Yosemite Climbing Association will once again host a Yosemite-wide cleanup to benefit the park and help restore high-use areas after the busy summer season. The goal of the event is to intensively clean all areas in the park before the winter rains set in. This will include roadways, the river corridor, trails, parking areas, campgrounds, climbing areas, and lodging areas.

Volunteers will meet in the front of the Visitor Center between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm from September 27th to October 1st to pick up trash bags and litter sticks.

On September 28th, the Public Lands Highlander will stop by El Portal Elementary School at 7:00 PM to present a $1,000 grant to the Yosemite Climbing Association to help supplement the budget for the week-long National Public Lands Day events.

The check ceremony will be held prior to screenings of Josh Lowell's Dosage Volume IV and Peter Mortimer's First Ascent, which are both part of the Reel Rock Film Tour. Austrian climber, Klem Loskot will be on hand to help introduce the film and sign copies of his most recent book. East Auditorium behind the Valley Visitor Center.

San Francisco

Golden Gate National Recreation Area

September 30th - National Public Lands Day – 9:00 AM 3:00 PM

San Francisco , CA  

 The Public Lands Tour will culminate at Golden Gate National Recreation Area where a yet-to-be determined grant will be awarded to The National Parks Conservancy to help assist with their efforts for this large-scale volunteer event. The National Parks Conservancy along with Golden Gate National Recreation Area are hosting eight separate work projects to celebrate National Publilc Lands Day including sites at Crissy Field, Fort Funsen Nursery, Marin Headlands Native Nursery, Presidio Nursery, Muir Woods, and Alcatraz Island.

 

Volunteers will meet at Crissy Field at 9:00 AM for free breakfast and coffee before being shuttled to various worksites. Volunteers will be shuttled back to Crissy Field at 1:00 PM for free lunches and a presentation by guest speaker, Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the Woods.”
